De-mentes joins Sociedad y Discapacidad – Sodis, the Disability Rights Legal Clinic – PUCP, and the Academic Directorate of Social Responsibility – PUCP (DARS), in supporting the organization of the "I Decide = I Exist" art exhibition by Bulgarian artist Nadezhda Georgieva, to be held on the campus of Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú.
In honor of an inclusive society that respects the rights of all individuals, this exhibition offers an artistic approach to the consequences of civil interdiction on the lives of persons with disabilities, illustrating the loss of freedom and rights that it entails. The paintings reflect the frustration of these individuals, appealing to the humanity of the viewer.
Between 1998 and 2014, 8,409 individuals were sentenced to civil interdiction under the framework of the Civil Code, which establishes that "persons with mental retardation and those suffering from mental deterioration that prevents them from expressing their free will are relatively incapacitated". Proposing as an alternative the provisions set forth by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities—namely, "supported decision-making"—this exhibition invites us to support the draft bill seeking the necessary reform of the Civil Code to guarantee the exercise of legal capacity for persons with disabilities, which is currently under review in Congress.
